Happy Holidays from Art Nudes

Hi all,

I'm taking a little time off from blogging to eat too much and visit with friends and family for the holidays.  I'll resume posting just after the new year.

In the meantime, here's a special seasonal post for you all.  Since this is the "season of giving", you may be interested in this list of secular charities.  These organizations do great work without any proselytizing.  I encourage you to support them.

Tomek Jankowski

Exceptional work ranging from gorgeous fashion and beauty work to the visceral and surreal "Tissue" series, by Polish photographer Tomek Jankowski.

Alberto Bevacqua

Here's an unusual combination of artistic disciplines that end up working well together. California based furniture and steel fabricator/photographer Alberto Bevacqua utilizes his skill with metal to create strange body ornaments for his models. Interesting stuff.

Japanese photographer Mitsuo Suzuki wrote in to let us know that he's just updated his website with a new series entitled "Corset". Go pay him a visit and check it out!

THE RAW FILES: The Making of a Photograph (Mac)

Mclain Swift just posted an interesting "making of" tutorial for the image above over at the RAW FILES blog. While it's a simple lighting set up, this is a good introduction to the setup process, lighting basics, and post-production.

THE RAW FILES: The Making of a Photograph (Mac)

In other news, I'd also like to thank Mclain for taking on the role of moderator over at the Art Nudes Forum. He'll be taking care of cleaning out the spam posts when I'm too busy or just not paying attention. Thanks Mac!

French born, New York based, fashion and editorial photographer Remi Rebillard wrote in to share his work with us.

A warning for the faint of heart, or early morning risers like me, if you choose to watch the flash intro to his website, you may want to turn down your volume!

Heavily textured, distressed and worked over images by photographer Marc Dubord. Not everyone's cup of tea perhaps, but this photographer is consistent in his approach and his images are bizarrely creative.

Jim Linderman

Vintage photo collector and writer Jim Linderman has just published a couple of books that might make nice gifts for someone on your list this year.

The first is his illustrated essay on vernacular erotic photography from his blog of the same name:

Shy Shamed Secret Shadowed Hidden

The second is a reprinting of a marvelous old scrapbook of "racy" clippings found in the trash over 50 years ago.

Eric Kellerman - Jannis Brevet

Art Nudes' own resident curmudgeon Eric Kellerman has gone from photographing the nude to photographing the food!

Eric's latest project is the photography for a new cookbook from one of the Netherlands' top restaurants. Although this is slightly off topic from our standard fare around here, I wanted to share our old friend's latest accomplishment. It looks beautiful, great job Eric!

A primary goal of this blog is to be a resource for inspiration and reference for photographers. Therefore, it's always a pleasure to hear from readers who want to share their work. Following are three of the readers who've written in the past week or so.

Stephanie Anne Landers

This week's model profile is professional art model (and Art Nudes reader) Stephanie Anne Landers. Stephanie's striking looks remind me of Faye Dunaway from the Bonnie and Clyde era. Sadly, last time she was on Vancouver Island, Dave Aharonian hogged her all to himself, (damn you Dave!) but hopefully she'll make it back this way again. In the meantime, she is based in New Mexico, but continues to travel around North America and shoot with other fortunate photographers.

Nude Modeling Controversy in Utah

Adam, an art student and Art Nudes reader from Utah sent in this article demonstrating that power of nude modeling and art to generate controversy even today. It's often easy to forget that there's some mighty conservative points of view out there that clearly equate nudity in any form with sin and sex.

As Adam points out, the article is interesting, but the real "comedy gold" kicks in, in the 190 reader comments in response to the article.

Model Profile: Brooke Lynne

Self-portrait by Brooke Lynne

I decided a while ago that I wanted to start featuring more models on this site for a couple reasons. First, it's good to get the perspective from the other side of the lens sometimes. Secondly, it's always great to look at their portfolio and see the myriad ways one model can be interpreted by multiple photographers.

So, without further ado, here's the website and blog of figure model Brooke Lynne.

Rudolph Rossi

Photography collector Jim Linderman has assembled a remarkable collection of work by 1950s photographer Rudolph Rossi and has created a blog to share the images. Frankly, the photographs are not stunning. However, it's the assembly of a body of work from a heretofore unknown artist toiling away at a labour of love in a time before this style of work was widely accepted that makes this interesting.

FSC Challenges 2257 and 2257A in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia

Here's a big shout out of congratulations to the Free Speech Coalition for tackling a HUGE issue that has become a bitter fact of life for our American photographic compatriots. Specifically, the dreaded 2557 and 2557a legislation.

If you aren't familiar with the 2557 saga, photographer Dave Levingston who sent in this link and who describes himself as one of the "et al" named in the suit, describes it thusly:

In short this clearly unconstitutional law violates the guarantee of free speech contained in the Bill of Rights by making it a felony to fail to follow obscure, complicated and unclear procedures for record keeping for many types of completely legal photographs…and other forms of artistic expression such as painting and drawing. That’s right, it’s not just about photography. The idea behind this law appears to be to make it so impossible to follow the law that people will stop producing perfectly legal art work and at the same time make it possible for the government to pretty much charge anyone whose work they don’t like with a felony. Conviction can result in a 5-year prison sentence and designation as a sex offender.

The law requires that you keep detailed, cross-referenced records of all the models you work with for those images. You also must publish a statement of where those records are maintained with each publication (including on the web) of any of those images. And those records must be available for unannounced inspection by federal agents at least 20 hours a week, every week. That’s right, if you maintain the records yourself you not only must publish your address, but you also can never go on vacation because you have to be there 20 hours every week in case an inspector wants to visit unannounced. Oh…and during that inspection they are permitted to look around for anything that they might consider a violation of any law, not just 2257A. So you have effectively given up your constitutional protection against warrantless searches.
