I think I'll end 2004 with a post of one of my favourite Japanese photographers. Ao Gunji's work has an almost documentary look to it and the use of natural light creates a calm and comfortable feeling.

[ Nemo Nox ]

Ex-patriate Brazilian Nemo Nox is a multi-talented guy. His skills include writing, television production and of course photography. For his Cave Woman series, he juxtaposes paleolithic (or is it neolithic?) imagery with figure photography.

Models Directory
One of the biggest challenges facing figure photographers is finding models. There are lots of online modeling forums and "talent agencies" out there on the web, but here's my pick of the top three.
OneModelPlace.com
is huge and very popular, but frankly I've had nothing but frustration trying to sign up and contact models due to being a Mac user. Still, this is THE site for most people.
Musecube.com
is smaller, but still has 65,909 portfolios online, and is free and easy to join.
FreelanceModels.com is another free, easily searchable and well populated modeling site.
Have fun!

emil schildt Photographer
Speaking of old favourites, Danish photographer Emil Schildt is right near the top of my personal list. So I was disappointed to find that the link I had bookmarked for his website now leads to an art school page. (I think it's possibly the school Emil teaches at.) Anyway, using Google, I was able to find this gallery of his work at usefilm.com. It'll do in a pinch, but the images are small and it doesn't have as much content as his old private page.
If anyone can help me out with a link for Emil's new webpage (if he has one) or any information about what happened, please leave me a note in the comments section.
I might not get a chance to post again before the 25th, so happy holidays everyone!

Artists :: Alvin Booth

Time to revisit an old favourite. Alvin Booth presents many of his exquisite images in groupings in handmade metal frames. This is really great stuff, and I've found few other artists whose work grabbed me the way Booth's work does.

Jean Jacques Andre Photography

Jean Jacques Andre has been photographing nudes for over fifty years. His work ranges from straight forward figure studies to complex photomontages. It's a wonderful and broad scope and it's fascinating to observe how the models and the artistic style evolve and change over such an extended time.
I know JJ personally, and he is the man that inspired me to take up figure photography. So I'm delighted that he's finally got a website to show off a small sampling of the images he's created over the past five decades so I can feature it here on this blog. Don't miss this one!

the HOMELAND SECURITY Collection
Funny, witty and provocative work by activist artist/photographer/filmmaker/animator John Douglas
"Isolationism, vulnerability, cold steel, human flesh, and latent violence seethe in “Homeland Security” .... the latest provocative series of photographs from the veteran Charlotte multi-media creator. Sporting an M16 and nothing else, Douglas appears in this series of images as a literal “one-man army” -- duplicated photographically and armed to the teeth in a procession of tableaus that confront the power and impotence of firepower."

Here's an online book in Flash format of French photographer Pascal Tarraine's work. He does nice black and white work with a subtle but distinctively European feel.

Dan Nelken
Just a quick look at Dan Nelken's Bathtub Series. Only a few nudes here, but as a whole it's a nice collection.
No image here because he has the images on his site sliced so they can't be easily downloaded.

Maria Magdalena #2 (Judean Desert)
2003, C-Print
Israeli photographer Noel Jabbour.
"In this series of photographs, Jabbour takes as her source the legend of Saint Mary Magdalene. Over the last two years, the artist has photographed herself in key places that feature within the legend of the saint; the lake at Galilee where Mary anointed Christ’s feet, the River Jordan and Saint-Baume, near Marseille, where she lived in isolation after fleeing with the Christian community after the Crucifixion. Depicting herself as the saint at seven key stages of Mary Magdalene’s life, she uses the self-portraits as an exploration of her Christian heritage and as a comment on wider issues."
