Leonard Nimoy (yes, THAT Leonard Nemoy) uses classic art and religious themes as his inspiration. His Shekhina series which uses nude models to depict the Hebrew goddess figure, generated considerable controversy for its use of objects sacred to Judaism.

Voyeur

An online version of the photo book Voyeur brings together a collection of photographs that explore our obsession with sneaking a peak, or outright staring.

"Many of the photographs gathered here examine the play between voyeur and object of desire. Happily, few see it in the same light. There are at least as many shades to the subject as there are photographers in this exhibition. Never has a medium been more perfectly wedded to its subject than the camera is to voyeurism."

fine art nude photography by Ian Scrivener

OK, that's enough about my personal life and friends. Here's some nice work by Austrailian photographer Ian Scrivener.

Hey, speaking of new baby's, let me introduce mine! I took my own advice and went on down to proud Papa Andrew's store and did my part towards his diaper bills. Yep, I've officially moved up to medium format with an old but sweet Pentax 645. Early Christmas for me.

Camera Traders - Used Cameras & Equipment

Congratulations to Sarah & Andrew on the birth of their second son! Born this Monday morning and tentatively named Jasper.

Sarah is one of my favourite models and dearest friends (that's her above). Her husband Andrew, is also a good friend and owner of a great camera store. He's got an excellent online inventory, and now he's got two sons to feed, so go to his website and buy that Leica you've been wanting.

Although I don't generally feature fashion photographers on this blog, Eccentris is a tour de force of high style and cutting edge flash web design. It has more credits than some movies I've watched! #6700098 :: photography :: eng.ver

From: "You're Looking For Life"
Takaci Hirano

Takaci Hirano's strangely beautiful photographs are the exact opposite of Nobuyoshi Araki's. Rather than objectifying the feminine, his photos are love poems to his geeky but adorable art student girlfriends. He obsessively documents their every activity from the most mundane to the most intimate, and the results are extraordinary. I don't know what it is about this site but I had to view nearly ever image in each of the fairly large portfolios. Mesmerizing.

The Massive Dev Chart: B/W Film Development Times, Processing Data

The Massive Development Chart is an invaluable resource for black & white users who do their own processing. This online tool allows you to cross reference any film against any developer to determine the correct processing time. Let's say you've got a roll of Ilford SP816T police surveillance film and a fresh batch of Amaloco AM74 developer. This would be the place to find out that it would take 8 minutes to process your film at the standard 20 degrees. True darkroom geek heaven.

Plus there's tons of extra information about push processing, discontinued films, you name it. Bookmark this one.

Here's a group exhibit entitled, CRAZY SEXY HOLLYWOOD.

"The show brings together six of Los Angeles' finest contemporary photographers in a collection curated by Carlos (Batts) himself. Patrick Hoelck, Estevan Oriol, Rick Castro, Dave Naz, Steve Diet Goedde and Batts present a total of fifty works that pay tribute to the looks, attitudes, glamour and grittiness that make Hollywood what it is. Hardly a photojournalistic journey, CRAZY SEXY HOLLYWOOD looks beyond the landmarks and celebrities, to the patchwork of souls, personas and styles that make this unique city what it is."

Images and Ideas - The Ryerson Kodak Lecture Series

Time for a little deep thought here at Art Nudes. A friend sent me this link to the Ryerson Kodak Lecture Series and I thought I'd share.

"Materials from more than 100 presentations from the archive of the Kodak
Lecture Series held in the collections of the Mira Godard Study Centre
were digitized to create a multimedia Web site with images, text and
audio clips. The Web site includes biographical information, images of
the artists and their work, interviews and excerpts from the
presentations. A database allows the user to search the presentations
according to speaker, practice, keyword, and year of the lecture."

Bellydancers and Harem Girls

In keeping with the vintage theme today, here's two galleries interpreting the mystique of the Orient from late 19th and early 20th century points of view. The first gallery is strictly fantasy, consisting of European models dressed in costumes. The second gallery features what were put forth as "travel" or "documentary" images in their day and feature actual ethnic models. However, these are in many ways equally fanciful and contrived and clearly served to tittilate the Victorian viewer.

PHOTOLOGY - Nobuyoshi Araki

"Tokyo Nostalgia", 1997
Cibachrome Print, cm 60x40

Love him or hate him, and believe me there's plenty of people in both camps, Nobuyoshi Araki is one of Japan's best known photographers. His nudes have a desperation and perversity that is genuinely unpleasant. This isn't to say that they aren't good. Eroticism or glamour isn't the intent of these images, rather they seem to be reports from hell issued by a damned soul.

Critic Monty DiPietro has written a beautiful essay of the complicated and conflicting emotions he experienced while reviewing Araki's work. I definitely recommend reading this one if you want some kind of an understanding of Araki's overall body of work.

PHOTOLOGY - Nobuyoshi Araki

Lately though Araki's work has taken a very different turn. His subject matter is now flowers and cats instead of prostitutes. Do they symbolize redemption or something different? Again, to understand Araki, I recommend visiting his offical website and finding out where he's at now.

Artists :: Alvin Booth

Here are six series by the incredible Alvin Booth. Each gallery contains multiple images and sometimes multiple pages. While you shouldn't miss any of them, the Corpus series is my favourite. Booth is takes his photography that one step further, presenting it in non traditional formats such as stereo viewing boxes, small hand made frames hung in grids of multiple images or in glass vitrines like Victorian entomological specimens.

Artists like this are few and far between. This is one for the permalinks section.

Lucien Clergue

"Lucien Clergue was born in Arles, France in 1934. He began studying photography when he was 15 years old and in 1953, he began his career as the first to photograph Picasso in the Roman arena at Arles. His friendship with the master continued until Picasso’s death in 1973. During these years, Picasso guided him, and introduced him to significant artists such as Jean Cocteau. Clergue collaborated with Cocteau for many years and had influential relationships with such renowned individuals as Edward Weston, Manitas de Plata and the Matador, El Cordobes."

There are seven pages to this gallery of Clergue's work, but the links are easy to miss at the very bottom of the pages.

"Why another photo community? Are you an amateur or professional photographer? Do people tell you that your work is amazing? What are you doing with your work?

This is not another camera club site for pretty sunset pictures or cheesy photoshop work. We are a community of photographers, professional and amateur, who look for more than the average in photography.

If you are working in 35mm, medium format, large format, instant film or digital and are looking for a home for your body of work then you are at the right place. If you are a collector of photographs, photographic books or cameras you will find people who share your interests."

Ana Casas Broda
Diet Journals

The work of Ana Casas Broda is intensely personal and broad reaching without ever becoming self-indulgent or moralistic. Her photos and text explore self image, family relationships, memory and nationality in equal measure. Amazing stuff.

"Since we left for Mexico I often return to Vienna to see Omama, my grandmother. I immerse myself in the albums as if they hide a secret, the key to some mystery.

I can’t tell the difference between the photographs and my memories. I don’t know anymore if I constructed them from the images."
