Vintage Photographs

One of my many obsessive collection habits is antique photographs. I don't pretend to have any special knowledge, I just buy what I like, usually for under $5.00. Consequently I've got boxes and boxes of old pictures of every description. Therefore, I was excited to come across the Vintage Photographs Live Journal where many people upload thier finds. Although you'll find few or no nudes here, photography enthusiasts (like me) who just like the way photos from various ages look will love this site.

Most of the images on Gianni Candido's website aren't nearly as disturbing as the one above, but I just had to pick this one.

Images like this always make me wonder about the conversation between the photographer and the model. "See, I've got this idea with an octopus..."

Here's an excellent interactive flash page showing step by step the retouching secrets used on those magazines you always see in the grocery store. Although this is meant for the worthy purpose of bettering girl's self-image, it will also be of interest to photographers looking for retouching techniques. Completely contradictory purposes maybe, but true nonetheless.

Our First Award!

For reasons unknown to me, this blog has always had a large following amongst Portuguese speaking readers from both Portugal and Brazil. Therefore, it's only appropriate that our first award comes from the Portuguese website, "Square of the Republic in Beja" who have honoured this site by awarding it the gold in the International Blog category.

Thank you!

Every now and then I rediscover an old favourite whose site I haven't visited in too long. French photographer Ernesto Timor is one of them. This prolific photographer is constantly reinventing and updating his website, so even after a few months odds are that there will be lots of new material.

Longtime visitors to this blog will know that I'm a fan of several Japanese photographers. Therefore, I was delighted to receive an email from Takaci Hirano this morning telling me that after hearing about it on this blog, he'd gone to Tokyo to visit Suzuki & Gunji's exibition Duo Tone. He met up with them and had a good talk about photography and this blog. It's very satisfying when I hear stories about real world connections and results happening because of what I post here. Especially when it's on the other side of the world from where I live!

Anyway, Takaci also wanted to let me know that his own exhibition is opening in Osaka next week. Please see below for details, and if you can get to Osaka, go see this show.

Start Photo is an online photo art community for photography education, photo critiques and information. Although I didn't have time to dig into it, these photo forums are how I got started talking photography on the internet, so I'll always have a soft spot for them.

The above photo is from Norbert Guthier's feature gallery, Type 55.

DISCUSSION POINT

I'm going to try introducing "Discussion Point" as a new, irregular feature on this blog. It's great when a post causes a flood of comments and opinions, so periodically I'll post an opinion or question and throw it out to all of you for your two cents. I know there is a least one of you (yes, I'm talking about you Eric) that thrive on this stuff, so we'll see how it goes.

Our first Discussion Point is a doozy. I recently received an email informing me I'd overlooked posting the work of David Hamilton. In fact, I hadn't overlooked it, I've just deliberatly choosen not to post it. However, that got me thinking about the issues around Hamilton, Jock Sturges and Sally Mann and why I don't post them here. (WARNING: A Google image search for any of these photographers will return photos with underage models).

Sally Mann, Jock Sturges and David Hamilton all use young models and have been soundly criticized and vilified for it. Personally, I think Mann's and Sturges' work has artistic merit, whereas Hamilton is all about titillation. I also just plain don't like the look of Hamilton's photos. They've got a very dated 1970's Penthouse feel that just adds to their overall lack of appeal.

If you are not familiar with him, here's a brief (and unillustrated) biography

What do you think about these photographers and Hamilton in particular?

I was really pleased today to hear from one of my favourite photographers, John Casado. John wrote to let me know that his long awaited book has finally come out. It looks beautiful, and is limited to 1000 casebound, signed copies and the $48.00 US price seems extremely reasonable. Seems like a good Christmas present to me. You can buy a copy through his website using Paypal.

I encourage you all to go check it out and support one of our most talented readers.

This link, like so many others over the past couple of years is thanks to a certain very prolific Portuguese blogger named Mariana. Every month this amazing lady has sent me dozens of links to choose from. I don't use all of them, but even so, I've still got lots of them bookmarked for future posting. I try to thank her regularly, but if I did with everyone of the links I use it would get pretty repetitious. Therefore, I've decided to thank her for all her hard work and continued dedication to this blog by naming her Honourary Editor. Thanks for everything Mariana!

There are a lot of talented photographers out there, but very few of them produce work that truly enters into the realm of the sublime. Arno Rafael Minkkinen is one of those few. In my opinion, there isn't a photographer alive that produces images of the nude in the environment as good as Minkkinen's. Don't miss the work of this master.

French photographer Joseph Auquier wrote and directed me to his website. Frankly, I'm not crazy about the wild colour manipulation on several of his galleries, but much of his other work is well worth checking out.

Considering what a populous country India is, I see very few photographers there doing nudes. However, when I do find one, I usually really enjoy it. David De Souza is a good example. He is a professional photographer based in Mumbai, India, and he produces beautiful images.

Here's an interesting blog that I've bookmarked recently. Letra Corrida is in Portuguese, but the pictures do the talking. The webmaster, Jose features an interesting mix of photography and classical paintings. Since I've been looking at alegorical paintings for years trying to figure how interpret some of those themes into my work, I was glad to hear about this site. Sooner or later I'm definitely doing my own version of The Judgement of Paris!

A small gallery of diverse work by American fashion photographer, Clayton James Cubitt AKA Siege.

**Update**

I neglected to mention the very important fact that this gallery is part of a fundraising effort by the photographer to aid his family who were left homeless as a result of hurricane Katrina. Therefore I've removed the direct link to the nudes.
Please go to the front page of his fundraising site to learn how to purchase a print.
