Peter van Stralen

Peter van Stralen has long been a favourite of mine for the incredible poses he manages to photograph his models in; so it was a pleasure to find this gallery of his work that I hadn't seen before.

Wessel O'Connor Fine Art

Exhibit

"Wrestling Series # 4" circa 1950s
8 x 10" toned vintage gelatin silver print

Western Photography Guild
June 14 - July 28, 2006

If you are in Brooklyn before the end of the month and want to see an exhibit of vintage beefcake photography, you'll want to stop by the Wessel & O'Connor Gallery for this exhibit. Of course, if you can't make it to Brooklyn, there are 65 images in this online gallery.

Wessel + O'Connor is very pleased to announce the first ever solo gallery exhibit of the renowned 1950's era Physique photo studio Western Photography Guild. Founded by Don Whitman (1917-1998) in Denver, Colorado during the post WWII physical fitness boom, it thrived for over 40 years.

As one of the top proponents of the golden age of Physique photography, he captured in his work the All-American macho virility that represented every man's fantasy of the Wild West. Even during an atmosphere of extreme sexual repression in 1950's America, his studio flourished, due in large part due to the unique skill and taste he employed in creating his work's "look"
.

Women of a Certain Age

For almost twenty years I have photographed the traces of human occupation in the landscape, history written visibly on the land.

In this work I am photographing the history of a life written in the folds and wrinkles of the body. --Joan Myers

I hope you all are managing to stay cool through the dog days of summer. As for me, I slept on an inflatable mattress in my basement darkroom for the second night in a row. Whew, it's hot here in Victoria!

Anyway, today I have a triple header post for you. Three Art Nudes readers have sent me notes recently letting me know about updates to their site, so I thought I'd share them with you.

Dave Levingston has added a new gallery that can be found under Fine Art Figure-->Figure in Nature-->Desert Southwest 2005

Graham Wallis has done a general rework of his site with lots of new images and a new design.

Last but not least, Curtis Joe Walker has a new series called Motion Blur Nude

If any others out there have site updates, or a website that's never been featured here before, please feel free to let me know.

Here's another translation job for any of you who can read Russian. What it the name of the photographer responsible for these extraordinary images?

**UPDATE** Thanks to Reader Wolf for letting me know that the photographer's name is Sergej Belov

Wolfgang Pietrzok Gallery

Here's an interesting series by Wolfgang Pietrzok. I'm not quite sure how these are done, although I'm assuming some kind of paint on a tempered glass plate with the photographer underneath. If anyone can translate the German or French description and the process is explained, let me know in the comments.

If you look down to the posts from July 9th, you'll see that I wasn't able to identify the photographer responsible for MLH Photos. Thanks to sharp-witted reader Denis from Sensuous Arts we now know that his name is Michael Helms. Thanks Denis!

Helms also has another website featuring more artistic work at Michaelhelms.com

Welcome on Thierry le Goues site

I've posted this incredible series by Thierry Legoues before, but it seems to keep popping up everywhere I look lately. After seeing it in a magazine today I decided it was time to introduce it to anyone who hadn't see it before.

Art Nudes reader Gorgui is another French photographer who uses a single name pseudonym. His introduction page explains that he does this to avoid interference with his professional life.

The beautiful locations in Arles that he uses for his shoots are a real benefit of European life. We simply don't have architecture that grand or ancient here in North America.

"The Gary Fong Lightsphere is a flash diffuser that is gaining popularity with wedding and portrait photographers world wide. His product is selling at a pace that the manufacturer can't keep up with. This Flickr photoset demonstrates the use of a to-go container to make your own."

My only complaint about these beautifully executed images by German photographer Marko Mueller is that there are far too few of them on his website.

MLH Photo Erotica

There's no doubt that lots of the work by the unidentified photographer behind MLH Photo crosses the line into erotica/glamour and sometimes even pornography. Nonetheless, there is masses of content on this site and much of it is just good photography, therefore I felt it was worth posting here. (Besides, I've been going a bit heavy on the art history lately.) This is also a great example of a photographer at the top of his game in a specific genre. His portfolio features just about every big name gothic/fetish model in the industry.

Photographers/Models FYI

As every figure photographer knows, one of the biggest challenges we face is finding talented and willing models. One of my models recently introduced me to Model Mayhem, it's a friendster/myspace style community that provides free portfolio services for both models and photographers. It has a heavy fashion slant, but there are plenty of models interested in figure work too, so I'd say check it out.

#6700098 Takaci Hirano Photography

Takaci Hirano wrote to tell me that he's updated his site with three more of his strangely engaging photo series. I've been struggling to describe this photographer's work for a few years now. Fortunately he's now added an English bio page that describes his works' theme pretty well as "Yori hito rashiku, yori sonomama ni", this is, "Be as human is, more as you are".

In The Chair

I apologize for the lack of posts this week, the beautiful summer weather we've been having has kept me in the backyard with a cold drink rather than inside posting to the blog. Luckily, Colin from Bog Brush hasn't been so lazy. He was kind enough to ask me for an interview which he has now posted on his site. So if you are interested in learning a little bit more about the background of this site and about me, check out the interview at the link below:
