Photodesign Corinna Holthusen

'In the age of the possible reproduction of the human body, the photography no longer shows what was, but what could be. In my work I search the convergence of: aesthetics, disgust, artificiality, the real and the genuine'

The chilling but fascinating work of German artist Corinna Holthusen

CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival

Well I'm back from a really enjoyable visit to Ontario. While I was only in Toronto a short while, I was delighted to find that my visit coincided with the eighth annual CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival. This photo festival features more than 400 photographers in over 170 exhibitions spread all across town. I was only able to take in a fraction of them but I was impressed with the diversity & quality of work that I did see. If you have a chance to visit Toronto before the end of the month, be sure a take in a few exhibits.

Thanks to reader Rex for tipping me off to this.

Well, I'm on the road again. This time traveling back to my ancestral homeland (Ontario, Canada) to visit my Mom for Mother's Day. So, this is the last post for a least a week until I return. In the meantime, I leave you with the fine work of Romania photographer, Mirela Bratu.

Sensuality and the Nude in Memorial Art - Northstar Gallery

For those of you that like a little art historical context with your nude art, here's an interesting photo essay by photographer Dennis Felty, entitled "Sensuality and the Nude in Memorial Art".

"For several years I have been photographing memorial and cemetery art from around the world. This project explores the conscious and unconscious themes and symbolic content of the art. At issue is of course man's struggle with transcendence and his own mortality. As the project progressed, I began to discover many very sensual images of beautiful young women depicted in the memorial art in the cemeteries I was visiting."

Frank Horvat * Very Similar

"It is natural, for a photographer, to want to share his visual pleasure with others, in particular with those who brought it about. This is the first motivation for these portraits. The second stems from questions I have asked myself for a long time, about the gap between the partiality of my glance and the present canons of female beauty."

Due to lack of Japanese on my part, I can't tell what's going on here, or what the intent is. I can tell you, this series of photos starts with the question "Art or Pornography?" and is credited as Pictures by Yu & model Kaori. For the record, my vote's for art.

S?ra Saudkov?

One of my all time favourite photographers, Jan Saudek has updated his website to include both his work and the work of his "right hand", Sara Saudkova. (See above)

Sara Saudkova is a terrific photographer in her own right, and very deserving of her own galleries. Go and check out her work here.

The Eternal Now - Mario Cravo Neto

"Quite often the duality between objects of inanimate nature and representatives of the animate world is underscored, "The subjects’ identities are nearly always obscure by something – a stone, a turtle, a bird, a nail-studded African idol – held before their heads; the work never suggests faceless alienation, but its opposite: a sublime if unsettling union of a man and nature."

V. Aletti in The Village Voice, New York, 22 September 1992. writing on Mario Cravo Neto

It takes a some digging to get past the writing, but the effort is paid off with some excellent photographs.
